PL - DE SDI Module: K-6 SDI Literacy (Year 2)

NOTE: This SDI Module YEAR 2- Participants Must have completed YEAR 1 to Participate in this learning. 

Aligned with the SDI Framework, this professional development initiative aims to develop and implement tools and processes that support teachers in delivering effective, specially designed instruction to improve literacy outcomes for learners with disabilities. 

Literacy 3:
Continue to apply the diagnose, design and deliver process to pinpoint student foundation skill need(s), designing an effective instructional plan and using formative data to inform delivery and that is sufficiently intensive. Ensure goals are rigorous enough to decrease the gap while keeping in mind reasonable goals that align to instruction, intensity of instruction and content covered over time. Ensuring  that goals are rigorous enough to close the gap. This course is approximately 5 hours of in-class time.

Literacy 4:
This course provides information on collaborative lesson design. Collaborative Design uses a diagnose, develop, and deliver process to consider learner strengths and needs based on setting, classroom expectations, and a collaborative process between families and teachers to design instruction to meet the learner need. This course is approximately 3 hours of in-class time.

Literacy 5:
This course has three purposes:

  • Diagnose, Design and Delivery: Apply the diagnose, design and deliver process to design and deliver intensified instruction.
  • Diagnose for Design: Use diagnostic assessments to analyze contextual, instructional and learner characteristics in order to select alterable variables aligned to student need.
  • Design for Delivery: Select high leverage practices aligned to student need to incorporate into focused literacy instruction.

This course is approximately 6 hours of in-class time
Literacy 6:
This course makes connections to the SDI Framework Critical Features  #8: Monitoring Learner Progress and #9 Adjust instruction as necessary based on learner progress and instructional fidelity. This course is approximately 1 hour of in-class time.

Additionally, leadership teams will engage in collaborative meetings over the course of the year for 3-4 additional hours of learning time.

Note: All participants, including those registering as "Participant Only," should plan to complete all of the work required [attendance, participation and assignments] to receive the full benefit of the training and a certificate of completion.


Important Session Information:


Learning Goals

Participants will develop an understanding of: Ensuring goals are rigorous, collaborative lesson design, intensification of instruction, diagnostic assessment and high leverage instructional practices.

Determine appropriate grade level expectations to set ambitious goals. Understand considerations for off grade level progress monitoring to ensure goals are are realistic and ambitious. Strengthen students'' involvement in setting/monitoring goals.

Learn the components of an instructional plan and how to maximize access and engagement for learners.

Understanding the four ways assessment data can be used to make data-informed decisions. Using formative assessments for data-informed decisions.

Course Requirements

Complete all in-class assignments, document participation in district leadership meetings and complete diagnostic surveys and development a case study for one student.

Materials Needed

A participant''s guide will be printed for each participant.

Other materials will be provided electronically.

Participants will need their computer and writing utensil.
