PL - Paraeducator Certification Course: Behavioral Supports
Virtual PLAEA June 15 2026 (Area-wide)




This para-educator course is one of three that will allow a person to become a certified classroom para-educator. 

Participants will gain knowledge, skills and strategies to assist, support and maintain the positive social, emotional and behavioral development of children. Upon completion of Introduction, Instruction Support, Behavior Improvement  class participants will be eligible for the Para-Educator Generalist Certificate.

This is a 2 credit (30 clock hours) blended course, which requires the completion of online assignments, quizzes and journals in Canvas. The learning is done through a combination of one face-to face zoom session and online coursework.  Participants will be expected to submit weekly assignments to complete the additional hours needed to receive a passing grade for this class.

A minimum of 10 hours of practical experience with students demonstrating application of skills and knowledge of the Iowa Paraeducator Competencies shall be successfully completed. Course completion is contingent upon the fulfillment of clinical hours. Please be advised that while coursework ends in June, clinical hours may extend into the fall. Final grades and transcripts will be issued only upon completion of the clinical component.

Participants need a computer and internet access.

 



Important Session Information:


The learning is done through a combination of one face-to face zoom session and online coursework. Basic computer skills are highly recommended.  Participants will be expected to submit weekly assignments to complete the additional hours needed to receive a passing grade for this class.

Session Notes:


All coursework will be completed online, with a deadline of June 19 2026 Participants will be expected to attend a one hour zoom session at the beginning of each course. The remaining hours will be asynchronous online learning through units in Canvas with weekly assignments to complete the additional hours needed to meet the course requirements.. Participants will receive an email from the instructor Valery Fuhrman with zoom link prior to the start of the course.
